Feasibility Study of Wind Energy System with Green Hydrogen Backup to Decarbonise Remote Communities of Greenland

Executive Summary

Can the electricity in Greenland’s remote communities be decarbonized using a combination of wind power and green hydrogen?

An attempt to answer this question was put in place by proposing a system of wind to electricity with green hydrogen as a backup. A scenario-based study using HOMER Pro for techno-economic analysis and Aspen Plus for electrolysis optimization was carried out with multiple system configurations on several locations in Greenland.

This study was not focused only on the production of hydrogen or wind energy, but on the analysis of the feasibility of a 100% renewable energy system utilizing a combination of both wind energy and green hydrogen to decarbonize electricity supply in these remote communities.
